HELB Waiver and Interest Rate 2025/2026. Every year Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), may change or review the Waiver and Interest Rate. The HELB updated the Penalty Waiver and Interest Rate from time to time.
HELB Waiver 2025
- Offer! 100% Penalty Waiver! HELB is happy to offer you 100% waiver on the outstanding penalties on your loan account.
- Check your current HELB Waiver and Interest Rate. To do it, applicants must log in into HELB Student Portal.
- Look at the top main menu Under “Online Services” -> Click on “Penalty Waiver“.
- Finally, you will see you current “Helb penalty waiver 2018” status.
HELB Interest Rate 2025

The Government of Kenya subsidizes the actual cost of interest on student loans, the rate of interest charged is relatively lower as compared to commercial loans. This interest is indicated on the loan agreement form. Other charges include:
- • Ledger (Administrative) Fee
- • Penalties charged for non-repayment of student loan
- • Insurance for specific loan products
Undergraduate Loan-Direct Entry
- Interest Rate Per Year: 4%
- Study Level: Undergraduate
- Target Group: All Kenyan direct entry undergraduate students
Continuing Education Loan (Salaried Students)
- Interest Rate Per Year : 12%
- Study Level: Undergraduate, Masters & PhD
- Target Group: All Kenyan students employed in compliant companies in Kenya.
TVET Loan
- Interest Rate Per Year : 4%
- Study Level: Certificate & Diploma
- Target Group: All Kenyan Diploma & Certificate students enrolled in TVETA & KATTI registered Colleges
Public Service Training Revolving fund
- Interest Rate Per Year : 4%
- Study Level: Masters & PhD
- Target Group: Civil service employees
Afya Elimu Fund
- Interest Rate Per Year : 4%
- Study Level: Certificate & Diploma
- Target Group: All Kenyan students enrolled in Medical Training Colleges
Afya Elimu Fund
- Interest Rate Per Year : NILL
- Study Level: Masters & PhD
- Target Group: All Kenyans.
Bursaries for needy undergraduate and TVET students
- Interest Rate Per Year : NILL
- Study Level: Certificate, Diploma and Undergraduate
- Target Group: All Kenyan direct entry undergraduate students and All Kenyan Diploma & Certicate students enrolled in TVETA & KATTI registered Colleges
County & Constituency Education Funds
- Interest Rate Per Year : 4%
- Study Level: TVET & Undergraduate
- Target Group: Kenyans from the sponsoring county or constituency
Partnership FundsFunds
- Interest Rate Per Year : 4%
- Study Level: Certificate, Diploma & Degrees
- Target Group: Dependent on partner requirements
